Greg Seely, the Academy’s 69th Permanent Professor, was born in 1954 in Long Beach, California. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1976. His first assignment was as a Project Design Engineer, 44th Civil Engineering Squadron, Ellsworth AFB, SD. In 1978 he became the Section Commander within the squadron. From 1979 to 1981 he was an Environmental Engineering Officer, Deputy Chief of Staff for Engineering and Services, HQ Strategic Air Command, Offutt AFB, NE. He was a Distinguished Graduate from Squadron Officers School, Maxwell AFB, AL, in 1980. In 1982 Greg became the Chief of Bioenvironmental Engineering in the USAF Hospital, Beale AFB, CA. He entered graduate school in 1985 at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering in 1986. From 1986 to 1988 he returned to the Academy as an Instructor in the Department of Civil Engineering. Since 1988 Greg has been a Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado. He returned to Berkeley in 1988 and received his PhD in Environmental Engineering in 1991. Returning to the USAFA Department of Civil Engineering, he served as the Deputy for Environmental Engineering, progressed from Assistant to Associate Professor, was Deputy for Operations, and became the Deputy for Field Engineering and Readiness Laboratory before leaving in 1997. Greg then was assigned as the Chief, Consultant Operations Division, HQ Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence, Brooks AFB, TX, for a year before becoming the Director of the Environmental Quality Directorate at the Center. During this assignment, his teams won national awards for Texas pollution prevention. Returning to the Academy once again in 1999, he was the Senior Military Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 2000 Greg was appointed Permanent Professor and Department Head. During his tenure at the Academy, Greg also served as an Officer Representative for the varsity football (2000–2004, 2006–2015) and men’s basketball (1995–1997) teams and as officer in charge for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (1992–1997, 1999–2002). He was the Chief, Readiness Plans in the AF Space Command Directorate of Installations and Mission Support, Peterson AFB, CO, during a sabbatical year, 2005–2006. He stood up the Academy’s Installations Directorate and served as its Director during an 18-month second sabbatical commencing in mid-2010. Greg was promoted to brigadier general and retired from the USAF in 2015.
Greg is enjoying retirement in Colorado Springs.
